The Giudecca of Bagnoli
Felia, Iureca, Giudecca
Before it was called the Giudecca, this corner of Bagnoli was the Felia, the oldest part of the village.
Between the thirteenth and the sixteenth centuries, Jewish families settled here, coming up from the port of Salerno along the trade routes: carvers, and dyers of wool and leather. The quarter took their name, which in the local dialect survives as «Iureca».
Written records follow their traces into the sixteenth century; after that, what remains is oral memory, the alleys and the names. Today the Giudecca is a place of memory: welcoming travellers here is our way of keeping it alive.
